The President of the Senate, Chief David Mark, has commended the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, for delivering projects that have direct impact on communities in the Niger Delta region. Senator Mark gave the endorsement on Saturday at the commissioning of the 1.5-kilometre Ndoma Egba Road and Erosion Control Works executed by the NDDC in Ikom, Cross River State.
The Senator President, who was speaking at the ceremony to officially handover projects to the benefitting communities in Ikom, praised the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba for collaborating with the NDDC in bringing development to his people. “The cooperation between the NDDC and the Senate Leader is the kind of understanding that we ask for from the people of the various communities, because without such synergy, projects like this will not have come on stream,” he said.
The Senate President noted that development projects were sometimes hampered when communities come up with all kinds of unnecessary demands on government agencies or contractors. He, therefore, urged all communities to imbibe the spirit of cooperation as exhibited by the people of Ikom.
The Managing Director of NDDC, Barr. Bassey Dan-Abia, said that the provision of key infrastructure was part of the mandate of the commission to fast-track development of Nigeria’s oil-rich region, adding that it was in consonance with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.
He expressed gratitude to the Senate President for finding time to commission the road and erosion control project, as well as inspect the Specialist Hospital being built by the NDDC in Ikom. According to the Managing Director “the hospital consists of 200 general ward bed space and 20 VIP private rooms.”
Barr. Dan-Abia said that the NDDC would go beyond just erecting the hospital building. “I have assured the Senate President and the Governor of Cross River State that NDDC will meet with relevant stakeholders to set up a team that would manage the hospital. The presence of the Senate President to inspect and commission our projects is an endorsement of our efforts so far. It gladdens my heart that the number 3 man appreciates our contributions,” he said.
In a related development, the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke also commended the NDDC for completing the Akparabong Surface Water scheme in Ikom Local Government Area of the state. He said that the massive water scheme, with a reticulation of 4.2-kilometre, would save the benefitting communities from the dangers of using contaminated water.
Governor Imoke, made the remarks while commissioning the water project and acknowledged the contributions of the NDDC to communities in his state. He said: “It has taken a lot of efforts for this project to be realized. It faced a few challenges along the line, including the need to expand the scope to reach more communities.”
Senator Ndoma Egba thanked the NDDC for giving the 3 communities in his locality clean and treated water. He observed that that the impressive project had brought life to his people, adding that he was honoured to be part of the project.
