Dr. (Mrs.) Christy Atako, presently the Director, Education , Health and Social Service of the NDDC, was born on August 21, 1959 and hails from Asang Eniong, Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. She had her early education at Primary School, Mayne Avenue, Calabar between 1965and1970 where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate. She proceeded to Union Secondary School, Ibiaku, from 1971 to 1975 for her West Africa School Certificate (WASC). She obtained the National Certificate of Education (English/French) from the College of Education, Uyo, in 1978. Thereafter, she attended the University of Sokoto, from where she graduated in 1984 with a First Class Honours degree in English. She did her post graduate studies at the University of Calabar, where she got the Master of Education (Guidance and Counseling) degree in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Guidance and Counseling with emphasis in Social Psychology) in 1992.
Dr. Atako also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma (Public Relations) from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos in the year 2000. She obtained another Post Graduate Diploma (Cross-Sector Partnerships) from the University of Cambridge in 2002 and a third Post Graduate Diploma (Conflict Resolution Skills) from the University of Coventry in 2007.
After her National Youth Service between 1978 and 1979 at the School of Nursing, Oshogbo, in Osun State, she worked with the Cross River State Teaching Service Commission from 1979 to 1981. She had a brief stint with the Nigeria Television Authority NTA Channel 9, Calabar as a presenter between 1982 and 1983. She went back to the Cross River State Teaching Service Commission to serve as a teacher at the Holy Child Secondary School, Calabar from 1984 to 1988 and later joined the Cross River State Civil Service Commission, Ministry of Education, Calabar as a Principal Education Officer from 1988 to 1993.
In 1993 she joined the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) as Assistant Director, Community Affairs. From 1995 to 2001 she was Assistant Director, Public Affairs in OMPADEC. Between 2001 when NDDC was set up and June 2002, she was Assistant Director and Acting Head of Community and Rural Development Directorate. She became Deputy Director, Community and Rural Development in March 2003 and held that position till May 2007, when she was appointed Head, Corporate Affairs, a position she occupied till March 2010.
Dr. Atako became Director, Community and Rural Development in April, 2010 and was later transferred to the Directorate of Education, Health and Social Services in 2012 where she was before her appointment as the Acting Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer. Her appointment took effect from August 7, 2013.
A versatile professional, Dr. Atako is a Fellow of several professional bodies, such as Institute of Strategic Management, Certified Institute of Public Administration &Management, Certified Directors Institute, Strategic Finance & Administrative Institute, as well as Institute of Corporate Managers and Public Administrators. She is also a Member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), Nigerian Institute of Personnel Management and the Institute of Management Consultants.
She is a recipient of numerous local and international awards and prizes, among which are National Youth Service Corps Oyo State Merit Award, University of Sokoto Merit Award and American Biographical Institute’s Great Woman of the 21ST century Award. One of her special awards is an Honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from the European-America University, Dominican Republic. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador of the University of Calabar.
Dr. Christy Atako has attended several local and international seminars/conferences. Her hobbies are reading, researching and traveling. She is married with children.
