NDDC: CELEBRATING POTABLE WATER IN NIGER DELTA COASTAL COMMUNITIES


The enviable achievements of the NDDC in addressing the hydra – headed problem of potable drinking water in communities in the Niger Delta Region is the subject of a feature article on page 23 of the Niger Delta Standard.

Writing under the caption: “NDDC: Celebrating potable Water in Niger Delta Coastal Communities”, the writer observes that lack of safe potable drinking water has been a major constraint among the people of the coastal communities and commends NDDC’s initiatives in arresting the situation.

The writer is particularly excited over the recently commissioned Biseni water project, which he says marks a new dawn in the life of the community and its people. According to him, the Biseni water project is worthy of celebration as it serves nine other neighboring communities with an estimated production capacity of 70,000 gallons and distribution network of about 20Km.

NDDC’S N3.8B ROAD CONSTRUCTION STALLED BY CRISIS


There are indications that an estimated N3.8billion road contract awarded by the NDDC in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has suffered serious set back. No thanks to incessant squabbles among the benefiting communities.
According to the Pioneer Newspaper, the 33Kilometre road project being handled by Energbol Nigeria Ltd, a subsidiary of the JCC runs through Ette township – Ikot Akpan Udo – Ikot Oyoro – Nda Uko – Okopedi.

Testifying at the Commission of Inquiry over the Ikot Akpan Udo crisis, a Representative of the Company, Mr. Emmanuel Ifiaboro said that the construction Firm suffered serious loses as its vehicles and equipment were indiscriminately seized while staff, particularly drivers and engineers were subject of attacks.

NDDC: CHARGES AGAINST ALAIBE, FAILED ATTEMPT TO RUBBISH HIM, SAYS AIDE

On Page 6 of the Vanguard Newspaper is the reaction of an aide to the NDDC Managing Director, Barrister Iniruo Wills to recent media report about the NDDC Boss alleging that Mr. Alaibe is billed to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal over failure to declare his assets.

Wills, who described the publication as a failed attempt to rubbish the integrity of Mr. Alaibe, made it clear that the Managing Director is a stickler to everything lawful and constitutional and therefore has never failed to declare his assets as a matter of duty.

“ This looks like a script mischievously conceived and acted upon by certain individuals with dishonest motives”. Wills said.

NIGER DELTA CRISIS WILL END WITH 2 MORE IJAW STATES

Eminent Ijaw Monarch and Former Chairman, TROMPCON, Pere Charles Ayeni Botu believes that the creation of two more Ijaw States will bring an end to the Niger Delta crisis.

Pere Ayeni Botu in an interview published by Champion Newspaper says the Ijaw people have been short changed, marginalized and criminally deprived of their God’s given wealth and therefore must be treated fairly if peace is expected to return to the area.

He accused the Federal Government of insincerity in resolving the Niger Delta issue, citing the withheld NDDC funds as one of the instances.

EX – MINISTER WANTS $30B FOR NIGER DELTA

The Daily Independent reports that a one time Minister For Finance in Babangida’s regime, Etubom Anthony Ani has advised the Federal Government to provide a take - off grant of $30billion to address the new initiative in the Niger Delta Region.
Ani, who made the call during a chat with Newsmen in Calabar, stated that there was no need for the nation to carry excess reserve while some parts of it are yearning for development.
He suggested that an appropriation of $20billion from the nation’s reserve with another $10billion from Excess Crude Account (totaling $30billion), be channeled for the construction of Roads, Railway services and other infrastructural facilities in the Niger Delta Region.

DIRECTOR TASKS CHURCH ON PEOPLES’ SOCIO – ECONOMIC, POLITICAL NEEDS

The Tide has a story that the Executive Director, Projects, NDDC, Engineer Beniah Elemchukwu Ojum, has challenged the Church not only to seek to satisfy the spiritual needs of the people through conversion, but should also cater for their economic, social and political needs.

According to the Paper, Engr. Ojum stated this in a keynote address at the presentation of a book, Religion and Social Conflict Management; A case Study of the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria, authored by Pastor Moses Okai, in Port Harcourt.

Ojum, who condemned youth’s violence in the region, stated that NDDC has done a lot to alleviate the deplorable condition of the people in the region. “ You can touch and feel the presence of NDDC in many of our communities. We have embarked on several infrastructural and human resource developments,” he said.
